In recent years, NIBA and its sister group, the Washington State Bar Association Indian Law Section, have raised and gifted tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to aspiring Indian lawyers from throughout the Pacific Northwest, through the national award-winning Indian Legal Scholars Program.
NIBA offers scholarships to Northwest Native law students every November and the Indian Law Section offers stipends to Native bar applicants each May. The scholarship moneys come from NIBA membership dues and a benefit auction, and charitable grants from the Tulalip, Muckleshoot, Lummi, Chehalis, Puyallup, Port Gamble, Jamestown S'Klallam, Suquamish Tribe, Swinomish Tribe, and Squaxin Island Tribes.
In August 2004, the American Bar Association bestowed the program with the prestigious Solo and Small Firm Project Award.
